Creativity doesn’t retire when we do. At every stage of life, there are new songs to learn, stories to tell and projects waiting to take shape.
That’s why creative engagement is woven into everyday life at The Blake. Residents can join a group art class, enjoy a live music performance, try a new craft or even take the stage at our annual Living Legends Talent Show.
But these activities offer more than enjoyment. Research points to the role the arts can play in supporting healthy aging. Here’s a closer look at the benefits of creative expression – and how our communities help residents continue discovering, learning and thriving.
Benefits for the Mind, Body and Spirit
Engaging in the arts has been linked to enhanced physical and cognitive abilities and overall quality of life. Positive effects include:
- Mental stimulation: Learning a new skill, practicing an instrument or completing a craft can challenge the brain while encouraging focus and continued learning.
- Stress relief: Getting engrossed in a piece of music or hands-on art project provides an opportunity to slow down, be present and relax.
- Fine motor skills: Activities such as drawing and crafting engage the hands and fingers, strengthening dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
- A sense of accomplishment: Finishing a painting, learning a song or creating a handmade gift can build confidence and provide the satisfaction of making something meaningful.
- Personal expression: Creative pursuits offer a way to express feelings, memories and individuality – sometimes in ways that words alone cannot capture.
- Socialization and belonging: A group art class can lead to conversation, a live music performance can get everyone singing along and a shared project can spark a new friendship.
And there’s no single definition of “creative.” Painting, photography, quilting, writing, dancing and other engaging experiences all offer opportunities for creative expression. The goal isn’t perfection – it’s participation and enjoyment.
